I remember......
The Star brewery in Auckland road, I didnt know the name at the time but I remember collecting bottle tops outside the open doors of a brewery not far from fitzroy street. Start from our old house at 85, turn left into Napier street then walk to the main road, thats Newmarket road, dodge the cars and its straight accross to Auckland road, walk down to the end and it was on the right.
I think the Star Brewery closed in the late 70s but i'm not sure, there are experts who know these things and hopefully I will get to talk to these individuals one day, perhaps. The only tour I went on was with what you could call a local character, he is a well educated bloke who I think got some degrees in our university but then decided to be a roadsweeper and learn all about local history.Soon I will email him and give him this address so I better be nice about him heh, he does a great job keeping the history of cambridge alive but I can see the time when he will only be able to do the talks from a classroom using old pictures.
Soon I will be able to take some pics of cambridge and put them up here, then I can show the real horror of what has gone on.The first pic I want to get is the site of the Three Tuns inn, where samual pepys drank. The building was knocked down in 1959 and it either was listed or had been but the university is very powerful. If I could sing, and play the guitar well, then imagine how good it would be to stand at the site of the three tuns and sing about what used to be there, dressed as samual pepys? hmm no maybe not, i dont think he sang, but a minstrel of the time, yes that would do it.Well ok i'll try to write a song, watch this space.
Along with our road sweeper friend, there is another bloke who keeps the memory of cambridge alive and he writes for the local paper, I dont know if ive mentioned him before, think he used to work in the library, now he writes a weekly article about how cambridge used to be.He took pics of the petty cury area just before half of it was to be demolished, I am very grateful for that as I dont remember it.
